Horror shot ideas

We researched some locations where we could film our opening for our horror film. After making my horror shot location types research we came up with some ideas that would suit the film.

Grave Yard

1-Grave Yard.
We decided that a grave yard would be a very atmospheric location for our film as it has representations of death and sorrow. Also the grave stones look scary and will bring assumptions to death. This grave yard is in Baldock therefore will be easily accessible. There are also many possible areas for shadows as you can see in the image which will create an eerie tone to the film. However As it is outside the lighting will get very dark and as in winter the wind may distract from the sound and the weather may be uncomfortable for the actors.

house

2-House/Attic
Our second option was to use a house of one of our actors
as they have an eerie attic that would be good to use as a location in our horror opening. We decided this room would be useful as its inside so would be comfortable for the actors also we would be able to light and use candle which would create shadows and make the scene very atmospheric. Our only issue with this location is there is limited space for the actors to all sit around.

Church

3-Church
Our third option was a church as the setting would be related to religion and death which would also create an eerie atmosphere as a church can be quite intimidating as they are very large and overpowering.

Making Blood

In one of our media lessons we used some instructions and ingredience to make edible blood that we could use for our film openings. We used 3 different recipes that all included different ingredience, such as; flour, red food colouring, tomato ketchup, golden syrup etc. Once we made all three we decided that the first recipe was the best for us as it was the right consistancy and the right colour.

Recipe 1 - Realistic Syrup Blood (edible)
-This method had the right consistancy as it was not too runny and when applyed onto the skin it will stay and not run off, however will run enough to give the effect that its dripping. The colour was very realistic as it was not too red it had a darker element to it, we did this by adding blue and green food colouring.

Recipe 2-Simple Red Blood (edible)
Method 2 is made from water and food colouring therefore the liquid was far too runny and wasn't very good on the skin as it didn't show up clearly, however it worked well when you splat it onto something as the liquid was thin so had a good effect.

Recipe 3-Chocolate blood (edible)
Method 3 involved coco powder therefore the mixture was quite brown and thick meaning it taste of chocolate. It was too thick to splat onto a surface as it didn't separate enough and just dripped.

Audience Survey Summery

We created our audience on a website called survey monkey which can take all the data and create charts with them so you can see the statistics of the answers.

Our results show that all of the poeple answering our survey were female this may be because no males found our questionaire however it shows that females our interested in films and horror films as they found the link.

These results show that most of the people answering the questions were 16-20 year olds with some other ages. But mostly the target audience was teenagers annd young adults.

Most people answering the questionaire said that they watch horror films and only around 40% said that they do not watch horror films meaning that horror films are quite a popular genre for films.

There was a mixed variety of answers for the types of horror films that people prefer to watch, most people prefer paranormal films and there were no answers saying they prefer thriller or supernatural films. This shows that paranormal films are more poplular and therefore we chose to make a paranormal film for our opening.

Our survey also shows that people generally watch horror films with friends or alone.
our survey also showed that people prefer horror films set in a house as around 60% said this.

Audience profile for horror films

To help me produce my film opening, I needed to find out what people want in the way of horror films, and what male, female and different age ranges prefer in the way of genres and horror.
I researched different age ranges and sex to find out what different people prefer from the internet and my questionnaire/survey.

I discovered that horror films are more popular with males who are under 25 and generally between 15-23.Reason being men are more likely to interact with the characters on the screen, and younger people generally appreciate the adrenaline the horror gives. I also found out that generally men prefer the gore side to  horror films rather than women

Here are some results from our survey:

As you can see these results contradict the general assumption that mainly males watch horror films however in our results 87.5% were female.

The results of our survey show that 100% of people that took the survey were 16-20 which agrees with the general assumption that most people who watch horror films are 15-23 however our results are biased as most people who answered the results are in the same school and age range.

This shows that the majority of people who watch horror films enjoy paranormal the most as the chart shows that exactly 50% chose paranormal where as none chose supernatural and thriller.

Institutional Resurch

An institutional logo is generally used at the start of films used by movie organisation or studios. These are memorable designs allowing their brands to be known and remembered by for example, Pixar.

Pixar Animation Studios, or simply Pixar, is an American computer animation film studio based in California Pixar began in 1979. Pixar has produced fourteen feature films, beginning with Toy Story in 1995. For over 25 years, Pixar has touched the hearts of millions of audiences around the world through its 14 feature-length masterpieces and countless short films. In 2010, Pixar created a new company based in Vancouver called Pixar Canada. The Pixar production logo is a sequence that appears at the beginning and end of most Pixar productions movies, and features a playful desk lamp.

Warner Brothers is another example of a very successful institutional production company. They are an  American motion-picture studio that introduced the first genuine talking picture in 1927. The company was founded by four brothers, Harry, Albert, Samuel, and Jack Warner. Warner Brothers became known for its tightly budgeted, technically competent entertainment films. is a global leader in all forms of entertainment and their related businesses across all current and emerging media and platforms. The fully integrated, broad-based company stands at the forefront of every aspect of the entertainment industry from feature film, television and home entertainment. The logo for warner bro developed in many ways throughout the years including many of the examples below and more.

Psyco film re-make and storyboard

ORIGINAL PSYCO CLIP
RE-MAKE OF SCENE
Evaluation

What was my role?
My role was to help with the planning of the recreation and what shots and actors we were going to use.I also helped on deciding the setting and location of the film recreation.

What went well?
I think that the different shots we used were effective as we tried to use as many techniques as we could, for example we use a close up,shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule etc.i also think that the idea of using a black and white filter looked very effective and made the scene look more like the real scene and more dated.

What didn't go well?
I think that the editing didn't go very well as the shots don't link very effectively and we could therefore improve on that. I also feel the script didn't go very well as we decided to remove sound to our piece.

What can you improve on?
I think we could improve on the editing and put more time into making the scenes flow better also we could have made a more detailed script for our scene recreation so we could have therefore included sound.

Birds Eye View
Panning shot: Panning is a camera movement where the camera will scan and follow a location whilst staying in the same spot. People often use tripods and turn them to create a steadier shot.
Establishing/Location shot: establishing and location shots indicate the setting a location of the scene, they generally are wide angle shots as well to create a sense of setting of the location.
High Angle Shot: high angle shots are elevated and tilted downwards towards the scene of action to create a smaller significance to the object/setting below.
Low Angle Shot: Low angle shots are tilted upwards below eye level. with the camera shooting up it creates a larger more sinister approach to a person or object so therefore is very regally used in horror films.
Close up shot: A close up shot involves much of the object or person in focus and there fore involves very little background and is mainly focused on particular object/person.
Long Shot: A long shot is a true to size photograph it can show a person or a whole scene.
Mid Shot: A mid shot only shows the characters waist and upwards. This shot are generally for dialogue scenes variations of there are; over the shoulder, two and three shots.
Two shot: A two shot is basically a shot containing two characters in. The shots are also used to show the emotional reactions between the subjects.
Extreme close up: Extreme close up is a magnified image of an object or person showing no background and extreme detail. These shots can be used for dramatic effect.
Worms eye view: Worms eye view is a shot where the camera literally is tilted straight upwards facing the sky, this shot is inevitably as though the observer where a worm. This shot is also the opposite of a birds eye view.
Birds eye view: A bird's-eye view is an elevated view of an object from above, with a perspective as though the observer were a bird. this is also the opposite of a worms eye view. These shots can be uses as location shots whilst panning from above.
